about
This song was done as a project for school actually. I was given the option of creating a piece of art instead of writing a research paper, and so I happily chose the creative option. One of the topics discussed in class was Plato's analogy of the cave. I thought it would be interesting to write a song from the perspective of someone who is inside the cave and is exposed to reality, but is unwilling to leave. The cave, as immaterial and unsubstantial as it may be, is his place of comfort, it's all he has ever known, so this character strongly rejects any attempt to draw him out of that place of safety. The music itself is also meant to reflect the ideas that surround the analogy of the cave. Inside the cave all one can see are shadows of true things playing out on the wall. In the first verse you can hear this represented by the disjointed chord structure. The Ancient Greeks used a modal tonal system and so I've exploited this in my chord structure/melody at the beginning to lend to the delusional, yet not unpleasant, feel. Then, when the character in the song is exposed to truth by someone who has escaped the cave, the chord structure becomes more concrete, and frightening. Eventually, the song's character chooses to reject true knowledge and return to his familiar shadow world. This is expressed when the tension is resolved an the music returns to it's disjointed, but more pleasant, sound.
lyrics
Here I am safe
Both of my feet planted firmly on
The floor of this place
While beautiful shapes, dance before me
Here I'm at peace
Me and just the silence as my
Sweet company
The familiar seems
As a mother's womb to me
But you come in the night
Speaking of your clarity
Filling me with fantasies
of a world outside
You come in the night
Distorting my reality
Playing on my sanity
With this world outside
I almost want to believe you
Go away, away from here,
away, away from here
If you've found this wonderful world
Then why don't you live there
And leave me be
In silence and security
But you come in the night
Speaking of your clarity
Filling me with fantasies of a world outside
I almost want to believe you
I almost want to believe you
Here, I am safe
Both of my feet planted firmly on
The floor of this place
While beautiful shapes
Dance before me
